Venezuela: Interim president hails amnesty bill's first vote
"A very important event has occurred for Venezuela: the unanimous adoption by all the political forces present in the Assembly, in its first reading, of the amnesty law, which is a law for peace and national reconciliation,"
"May this law serve to heal the wounds left by the political confrontation fueled by violence and extremism."
"May it serve to redirect justice in our country, and may it serve to redirect coexistence among Venezuelans,"
"The path of this law is going to be full of obstacles, full of bitter moments,"
"We ask for forgiveness, and we also have to forgive."
Delcy Rodríguez, serving as interim president, announced unanimous first-reading approval of an amnesty law intended to foster peace and national reconciliation. The draft could lead to release of hundreds of opposition leaders, journalists, and human rights activists detained for political reasons. The bill was introduced weeks after the United States captured Nicolás Maduro and still requires a second, final Assembly vote scheduled for Tuesday. Jorge Rodríguez described the law's passage as difficult and emotionally challenging, calling for forgiveness. The proposed amnesty would cover cases dating back to Hugo Chávez's 1999 inauguration and could lift bans on opposition figures including María Corina Machado.
