The United States carried out airstrikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria as retaliation for a drone attack on a US base in Jordan, sparking condemnation from regional governments and groups.
The United States, which promised more strikes, blamed Sunday's drone attack on a US base in Jordan on forces backed by Iran.
Despite the airstrikes, both the US and Iran seemed to be trying to avoid all-out war, as tensions in the region were already escalated due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
But with tensions already running high in the face of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, both the Syrian and Iraqi government joined Tehran in accusing Washington of undermining regional stability.
While the US claimed that the airstrikes were carefully targeted to avoid civilian casualties, the Iraqi and Syrian governments reported civilian deaths.
But the Iraqi government said civilians were among at least 16 people killed in the country's west, and Damascus also reported civilian deaths, but a war monitor said all 29 killed in the US strikes on Syria were fighters.
