US and Iran to meet for second round of nuclear talks
"As with the last round of indirect talks in Oman, it would be U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, meeting with Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, although President Trump said Monday that he would be involved in the talks indirectly. Both the U.S. and Iran are still firm in their demands. President Trump doesn't want Iran to possess nuclear weapons and so wants zero enrichment, but Iran insists it has the right to enrich uranium for research and civilian uses."
"This is the second time in as many weeks that the two sides discussed limiting Iran's nuclear program. The U.S. has wanted concessions from Iran beyond that nuclear program, and its ally, Israel, wants a lot more. Americans have paired the talks with a threat, positioning military force in the region."
U.S. and Iran officials held a second round of nuclear talks in Geneva while the United States increased military forces in the region. Negotiators included U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner meeting Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, with indirect involvement from President Trump. The U.S. demands zero enrichment to prevent nuclear weapons, while Iran asserts a right to enrich uranium for research and civilian purposes. Other contested issues include Iran's ballistic missile arsenal, use of regional proxies, and stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. Iran indicated willingness to curb but not eliminate its nuclear program; U.S. allies seek further concessions.
