Throwing a House Party This New Year? Swiggy, Zomato Strike May Disrupt Orders
"Workers linked to major platforms including Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon and Flipkart are expected to participate in a nationwide strike on December 31, a move unions warn could impact retailers and platforms reliant on last-mile delivery to meet year-end sales targets. The strike has been called by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT), with support from regional groups across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi-NCR, West Bengal and parts of Tamil Nadu."
"Unions say delivery partners, who form the backbone of India's app-based commerce ecosystem, are being pushed to work longer hours despite falling earnings. They allege unsafe delivery targets, lack of job security, arbitrary ID blocking, erosion of dignity at work and minimal access to social security. In a letter to Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, IFAT said it represents nearly 4,00,000 app-based transport and delivery workers nationwide."
Gig and delivery workers across India plan a nationwide strike on December 31 that could disrupt New Year's Eve food, grocery and e-commerce deliveries. Major platforms named include Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon and Flipkart. The strike has backing from the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) and regional groups in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi-NCR, West Bengal and parts of Tamil Nadu. Workers cite falling earnings, longer hours, unsafe 10-minute delivery targets, arbitrary ID blocking, minimal social security and erosion of dignity. Unions say a December 25 flash strike caused 50–60% service disruption. IFAT claims nearly 4,00,000 members and has sought urgent meetings with labour ministers.
