Palestinian paediatrician Dr Hussam Abu Safia served as director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza and remained in the besieged facility while his family lived there for months after their home was threatened. Israeli forces imposed a blockade that cut medicine, food, water and fuel, forcing medical staff to treat waves of war-wounded patients and make agonizing triage decisions about who might live or die. Abu Safia treated the injured despite being wounded himself; his son Ibrahim was killed and another son, Idris, was injured. In December 2024 Kamal Adwan was bombed and stormed; staff were detained and tortured. Abu Safia was taken into administrative detention without charge, prompting global calls for his release and demands for accountability.
