She also urged prosecutors to drop treason charges against some of the hundreds of protesters arrested, namely those whom she said "did not know what they were doing" and "merely followed the crowd." "The government has taken the step of establishing an inquiry commission to investigate what happened, so that we may know the root cause of the problem," she added."
President Samia Suluhu Hassan delivered her first parliamentary address since reelection and pledged to convene a commission to investigate killings during recent election protests. She offered condolences to bereaved families, urged prosecutors to drop treason charges against some arrested protesters described as having "merely followed the crowd", and pledged support for peace and reconciliation efforts. The AU judged the October 29 vote to have violated democratic values. The UN and opposition allege hundreds to more than a thousand deaths, while the government rejects those casualty figures and has not provided its own estimates for the political crisis.
