Syria: Dozens killed in sectarian clashes DW 07/14/2025
Briefly

The clashes in Sweida, southern Syria, resulted in at least 37 fatalities, mainly among the Druze community. Reports state that 27 Druze died, including two children, along with 10 Bedouins. The violence is tied to a longstanding feud exacerbated by recent kidnappings, including a Druze merchant. Security forces have been deployed, leading to the postponement of school exams and the closure of the Damascus-Sweida highway. Historical context reveals a precarious security situation following Syria's civil war, affecting minority rights.
At least 37 people have been killed in southern Syria amid clashes between members of Bedouin Sunni tribes and the Druze community, a war monitor said Sunday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the people had died in the fighting in the predominantly Druze city of Sweida.
Twenty-seven of the dead were Druze, including two children, and 10 of them were Bedouin, SOHR reported, adding that about 50 people have been wounded.
The latest violence followed a wave of kidnappings, including the abduction Friday of a Druze merchant on the highway between Sweida and the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Sectarian violence between Bedouin and Druze factions has occasionally flared in Sweida amid a longstanding feud between the two communities.
