Hundreds of thousands gathered around Sydney Harbour for New Year's Eve events, observing a minute's silence and holding phone torches in a show of solidarity with the Jewish community after the Bondi Beach terror attack. A menorah, a dove and the words 'peace and unity' were projected on the Harbour Bridge pylons. Fireworks displays, including an earlier 'Calling Country' show celebrating Indigenous history, lit the sky. Heavy security with thousands of armed police monitored the crowds. Many revellers remained relaxed and defiant, sharing food and games while applauding the early fireworks and responding to leaders' calls to continue public festivities.
