Ramadan began at sunrise in the Middle East and a day later in much of Asia because the Muslim lunar calendar starts months only when the new moon is sighted. The moon-sighting practice can produce regional variations of a day or two in observance start dates. Observances include daily fasting from dawn until sunset, prayers, nightly tarawih prayers, communal pre-dawn meals (suhoor) and post-sundown meals (iftar). In Jakarta, worshippers gathered at the Grand Mosque of Istiqlal to offer tarawih on the first night. The month features increased communal worship, family gatherings and charitable activities across Muslim communities.
