People of Burkina Faso should forget about democracy, says military ruler
"People need to forget about the question of democracy. We must tell the truth, democracy isn't for us. Democracy was false, we kill children. Democracy, we drop bombs, we kill women, we destroy hospitals, we kill civilian population."
"Since 2023, more than 1,800 civilians had been killed by the military, allied militias, and al-Qaida-linked Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM)."
"Human Rights Watch accused the junta and allied militias of committing crimes against humanity, including ethnically cleansing Fulani civilians and carrying out targeted killings."
Ibrahim Traore, the military president of Burkina Faso, declared that democracy is not for the country, following his coup in September 2022. He has banned political parties and extended his rule until 2029, dismissing the planned transition to democracy. Traore criticized democracy as false, linking it to violence and civilian casualties. Despite gaining support with anti-French rhetoric, he has struggled to address a jihadist insurgency that has caused significant civilian deaths and displacement. Human Rights Watch reported numerous human rights violations by the military and allied militias against civilians.
