Nurturing Compassion and Kindness in a Suffering World
"Over the last few months, I have traveled to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland to offer workshops for communities grappling with profound wounds: those suffering the ongoing impacts of the war in Ukraine; those still carrying the legacy of the conflict known as "the Troubles" in Northern Ireland; and those impacted by the deep scars of colonialism and civil war in Angola."
"These are not easy questions, and their answers are as complex as the global conflicts that prompt them. As I reflected while attending a Service of Remembrance at St. Anne's Cathedral in Belfast, I heard something that offered hope: an ongoing dialogue dramatized by individuals representing Truth, Mercy, Justice, and Peace. These timeless principles remind us that healing is possible when we dare to confront painful truths, offer mercy, pursue justice, and work for peace - within ourselves, our communities, and our world."
Workshops were offered in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland for communities affected by the war in Ukraine, the legacy of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and the scars of colonialism and civil war in Angola. These journeys demonstrate that suffering knows no borders and that compassion can transcend boundaries, though compassion often remains confined to local communities and is withheld from those perceived as distant. Critical questions arise about nurturing compassion, empathy, and kindness, protecting children's innocence amid violence, and cultivating compassion within families and communities. Engaging Truth, Mercy, Justice, and Peace supports healing through confronting painful truths, offering mercy, pursuing justice, and working for peace. The United States is deeply intertwined with global suffering.
