Multiple short-range ballistic missiles were launched from south of Pyongyang and flew roughly 350 kilometers northeast toward the East Sea. South Korea detected the launches and convened its national security council. Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said none reached Japanese territorial waters, no damage was reported, and Tokyo remained in close communication with Seoul and Washington. The tests occurred ahead of a planned visit by US President Donald Trump for the APEC summit. The launch was the first since May 8 and the first under President Lee Jae-myung, who campaigned on halting hostile moves and pursuing peaceful coexistence.
