"As the 31-year-old Sanders controlled the race, more than six minutes ahead overall, he suffered a calamity 138km in to the second half of a marathon stage from Wadi ad Dawasir to Bisha when careering over one of the huge dunes at high speed. Suffering a heavy crash on his factory Red Bull KTM, the 31-year-old eventually remounted gingerly, but, badly beaten up, ended 28 minutes behind stage-10 winner Adrien van Beveren's Honda by the finish, and dropped from first to fourth overall."
"It looks like, for sure, a snapped left collarbone, said Sanders. We went over a dune and it was pretty scary, and I nearly landed on Tosha [Schareina, the Spanish rider who is third overall]. I got up and knew the collarbone was broken and also the sternum, I've broken this as well so there's no power. It wasn't nice in the dunes at all, but unfortunately we've let the rally go now."
Daniel Sanders, the 31-year-old reigning Dakar and world rally-raid motorcycle champion, crashed 138km into the marathon stage from Wadi ad Dawasir to Bisha after careering over a large dune at high speed. Sanders finished the stage 28 minutes behind stage winner Adrien van Beveren and dropped from first to fourth overall. Sanders reported a snapped left collarbone and a broken sternum and described severe loss of power and heavy pain. Monster Energy Honda's Ricky Brabec stopped to assist after the crash. Sanders vowed to continue racing over the remaining three days despite losing any realistic chance of back-to-back titles.
