Nicolas Maduro's record on LGBTQ+ rights - LGBTQ Nation
"Nicolás Maduro, the recently ousted president of Venezuela, rose to power as a socialist promising greater financial security and progressive public policies to strengthen his country. However, U.S. economic sanctions and failed financial policies have turned Venezuela into one of the poorest South American countries, as well as one with the fewest protections for its LGBTQ+ citizens. With his vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, now in charge of running the country, it's likely that the anti-LGBTQ+ practices of Maduro's administration will continue."
"Born in a working-class family in Venezuela's capital city of Caracas, Maduro amassed political strength by founding workers' unions and joining the socialist political movement founded by Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez. Chávez later mounted two unsuccessful coups against his country's federal government; Maduro supported Chávez's attempts. Maduro was elected to Venezuela's legislature in 1998, was appointed as Maduro's Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2006, and served in that role until he became Venezuela's vice president in October 2012."
Nicolás Maduro rose from working-class roots through union organizing and alignment with Hugo Chávez's socialist movement, supporting Chávez's coup attempts and advancing through government ranks. Maduro served as foreign minister, vice president, and became president after Chávez's death in 2013. U.S. economic sanctions and failed financial policies contributed to Venezuela becoming one of the poorest South American countries with limited protections for LGBTQ+ people. Anti-LGBTQ+ practices intensified under Maduro's administration. With Vice President Delcy Rodriguez now running the country after Maduro's ouster, continuation of anti-LGBTQ+ policies is likely, reducing prospects for improved rights and protections.
