Middle East updates: Turkey hosts ministers for Gaza talks DW 11/03/2025
""Our principle is that Palestinians should govern the Palestinians and ensure their own security, the international community should support this in the best possible way diplomatically, institutionally and economically," Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said. "Nobody wants to see a new system of tutelage emerge," he told a news conference. Fidan demanded that Israel stop its continued regular violations of the truce with Hamas and guarantee that humanitarian aid organizations are given access to Palestinians trapped in Gaza."
"Among the issues discussed at the Istanbul meeting was the creation of an international stabilization force. Fidan said decisions on whether to send Turkish troops to watch over the truce will be weighed against progress at the UN regarding a mandate for the peacekeeping force. Turkey has been one of the sharpest critics of Israeli military action in response to the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023, and has accused Israeli leaders of looking for "excuses" to attack Hamas."
"Israel has said it does not want Turkish troops deployed to Gaza and made clear that it must be allowed to protect itself against terrorists in the enclave. Still, Turkey remains a key player in the peace process in Gaza, helping forward the effort to bring about a lasting ceasefire. On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, railed against Israel's "very poor [ceasefire] record.""
Turkey hosted representatives from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan and Indonesia in Istanbul to address Gaza and the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called for Palestinians to govern themselves and for the international community to provide diplomatic, institutional and economic support for Palestinian security. Fidan demanded Israel end regular violations of the truce and guarantee humanitarian access to Palestinians trapped in Gaza. Delegates discussed creating an international stabilization force and tied any Turkish troop deployment to UN progress on a peacekeeping mandate. Turkey remains active in ceasefire mediation despite Israeli objections.
