The Mexican naval training ship Cuauhtemoc returned to the port of Veracruz on Sunday amid official fanfare following a May collision with the Brooklyn Bridge that killed two crew members. Numerous sailors had been positioned in the ship's 150-foot-tall rigging when it smashed into the bridge linking Manhattan and Brooklyn, and about 20 sailors were injured. The vessel trains cadets in traditional navigation and conducts goodwill voyages to foreign ports; New York was one of 22 ports visited in 15 countries on the ill-fated trip. A Veracruz ceremony featured a flyover and President Claudia Sheinbaum paid tribute to the two sailors, both in their early 20s. US and Mexican investigators have launched probes into the crash.
