President Sheinbaum opened her first State of the Union following reports that the U.S. Pentagon explored potential military strikes against cartels on Mexican territory. She stressed Mexico's low average tariff rates and ongoing negotiations toward a trade framework with the United States, noting an upcoming meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She framed bilateral cooperation around shared responsibility, mutual trust, respect for sovereignty and territoriality, and non-subordinate cooperation. Mexico has cooperated on security, extraditing 26 suspected high-ranking traffickers to the U.S., while public outrage at possible U.S. strikes taps into historical memories of past U.S. invasions.
Mexico is the country with the lowest average tariff percentage in the world, and we continue to work with the various state ministries of our neighboring country," she said.
We have made it clear that the basis of this understanding is shared responsibility, mutual trust, respect for sovereignty and territoriality, and cooperation without subordination," she said.
