The Briton left his title rivals in his wake, earning a chance to make a major impact on the championship standings on Sunday and potentially to retake the lead. Enjoying a huge boost to his world championship ambitions, Norris delivered perhaps his best lap of the season in qualifying, to beat the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton into second and third."
"However, of greater import was that his fellow title protagonists Max Verstappen and his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, could manage only fifth and eighth fastest, respectively. The pole was a real statement of intent from Norris and McLaren and exactly the riposte they required after the recent momentum Verstappen has gathered as he cut the gap to the leaders. Lando Norris secured pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix with a superb lap at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. He beat Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton into second and third. Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri could only manage fifth and eighth fastest, respectively. Verstappen recovered from being 104 points behind Piastri after the Dutch GP to win three of the last four races and is now 40 points behind Piastri and 14 behind Norris. Norris had not taken pole since the Belgian GP. A win with Piastri finishing below second would elevate Norris to the championship lead since Saudi Arabia. Norris displayed cool command and the McLaren remained an enormously strong car; Piastri struggled after a tough qualification.
