JD Vance arrives in Israel as US attempts to shore up fragile Gaza ceasefire deal
"The US vice-president, JD Vance, has arrived in Israel to solidify the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, as Hamas officials joined talks in Cairo meant to bridge outstanding differences with Israel. Vance is expected to stay in the region until Thursday. His visit follows that of the US Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law. Vance met the two men on his arrival and is scheduled to see the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Tuesday night."
"The Palestinian news agency said Israel had violated the ceasefire 80 times and killed at least 80 Palestinians in the past 11 days. Israel, in turn, has accused Hamas of delaying the return of hostages' bodies, which it says is a violation of the ceasefire deal. Hamas has sent back 13 bodies but needs to hand over 15 more. The militant group said locating the remains would take time as many are buried under rubble."
JD Vance arrived in Israel to solidify a fragile Gaza ceasefire and will remain until Thursday. He met US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and will meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The ceasefire has suffered repeated violations since 10 October, including militants killing two Israeli soldiers and Israeli strikes on Gaza. Palestinian sources report Israel breached the ceasefire 80 times and killed at least 80 Palestinians in 11 days. Israel says Hamas is delaying return of hostages' bodies; Hamas returned 13 and must hand over 15 more. Unresolved issues include disarming Hamas and forming a technocratic body to govern Gaza. Egypt is expected to lead a stabilisation force.
