'It was a survival call': Palestinian mother thanks Ireland for son's treatment
"She said they were in a tent in Khan Yunis, in what was meant to be a safe area, when their tent was hit by a missile. She said they were all injured, but her husband and her youngest son were the most severely hurt. She ripped her shirt to wrap around her husband's leg when her son Mohammed called to her."
"I knocked on many tents, no one can come and help me. So I knocked (into) my neighbour, I begged him to help me, and I convinced him finally, and he came with his bike. He put Mohammed in the wooden box in his bike, and he went to the hospital - around two hours on the bike."
Mohammed, aged six, lost his leg after the tent where his family sheltered in Khan Yunis was hit by a missile. The family had moved from Gaza City to Rafah and then to Khan Yunis in 2024 seeking safety. Multiple family members were injured, with the husband and the youngest son most severely hurt. Mohammed's mother wrapped her husband's leg and urgently sought help as Mohammed's leg fell from her arms and his face began to turn yellow. A neighbour transported Mohammed by bike in a wooden box to hospital, about two hours away. The husband later died. Mohammed was evacuated to Ireland for nerve treatment and is among 19 children taken from Gaza for care since December 2024.
