Israel has stopped marking areas of Gaza as humanitarian zones after resuming airstrikes, escalating concerns for civilians in previously protected areas. A strip of land was designated as a safe zone in 2023, attracting over a million inhabitants, but was still targeted by Israeli strikes. The IDF has since ignored inquiries about reinstating these zones, increasing uncertainty about aid worker and civilian security, as about 70% of Gaza is now under evacuation orders or marked as no-go zones.
The move has heightened fears among aid workers for the safety of civilians sheltering in places previously deemed protected.
Official figures showed they were hit by at least 28 Israeli strikes prior to January and an investigation by the BBC put the number as high as 97.
