"Driving the news: Trump said Sunday that Iran reached out to the U.S. a day earlier and proposed to negotiate a nuclear deal. "We may meet with them. A meeting is being set up, but we may have to act because of what's happening, before the meeting. ... but a meeting is being set up," he told reporters on Air Force One on Sunday."
"Behind the scenes: Witkoff and Araghchi started exchanging text messages during the nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran last year, U.S. officials said. They continued to communicate even after the U.S. bombed Iran's nuclear facilities in June, and were still in touch about potential nuclear negotiations as recently as last October, according to a U.S. official and two sources with knowledge"
A direct channel of communication persists between Iranian deputy foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. special envoy Witkoff, with message exchanges and plans for a possible meeting. President Trump reported that Iran reached out to propose negotiating a nuclear deal and said a meeting is being set up while warning action might occur beforehand. U.S. officials say Araghchi and Witkoff began texting during last year’s nuclear talks and stayed in contact even after U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June. Iran also communicates via Swiss mediation and describes U.S. messages as contradictory. The White House and State Department declined to comment.
