"Speaking on Friday, Trump said, "Iran's in big trouble. It looks to me that the people are taking over certain cities that nobody thought were really possible just a few weeks ago." Asked about his message to Iran's leadership, Trump said, "You better not start shooting because we'll start shooting too." "If they start killing people like they have in the past, we will get involved," he added. Trump said any action would stop short of deploying troops."
Mass protests over the severe economic crisis have spread across Iran for nearly two weeks, beginning in Tehran in late December. Demonstrations initially targeted economic hardship but have broadened into calls to overthrow the Islamic regime. Iranian authorities responded with an internet blackout and security force crackdowns. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei labeled protesters 'vandals' and 'saboteurs' and vowed the clerical regime will not back down. The United States, through President Donald Trump, warned Iran that U.S. forces could strike if protesters are killed, though he said action would stop short of deploying ground troops. At least 45 demonstrators have been killed.
