A state funeral in Tehran honored approximately 60 individuals, including military commanders and nuclear scientists, killed in recent Israeli attacks amid renewed hostilities. Thousands participated, clad in black, waving flags and displaying portraits of the deceased Revolutionary Guard leaders. The event followed a 12-day war ending in a truce, with both Israel and Iran claiming victory. Iran's Supreme Leader dismissed U.S. claims about the impact of American strikes on Iran's nuclear program, while anti-American and anti-Israel sentiments echoed through the crowds as they mourned their leaders.
State TV showed footage of people donning black clothes, waving Iranian flags and holding pictures of the slain head of the Revolutionary Guard, other top commanders and nuclear scientists.
Both Israel and Iran claimed victory in the war that ended with a ceasefire on Tuesday, with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei downplaying the US strikes.
The coffins of the Guard's chief General Hossein Salami, the head of the Guard's ballistic missile programme, and others were driven on trucks along the capital's Azadi Street as people chanted: Death to America and Death to Israel.
Saturday's ceremonies were the first public funerals for top commanders since the ceasefire, and Iranian state television reported that they were for 60 people in total, including four women and four children.
