In 2024, Iran witnessed its highest number of executions in over two decades, with at least 975 people executed, representing a 17% increase compared to 2023. The Iran Human Rights Organization highlighted that the death penalty is increasingly used to intimidate and oppress dissenters, including political activists. Notably, the rate of female executions also surged, reaching its highest level since 2007, with many women executed for defending themselves against violence. The UN has expressed deep concern, noting that as many as six individuals were executed daily during heightened political tensions, particularly between Iran and Israel.
The high number of executions in Iran is deeply disturbing," also UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned in late January.
The death penalty serves as the basis for many human rights violations in Iran," Mahmud Amiri-Moghaddam, head of the Norway-based IHR, told DW.
It is used as an instrument to oppress and intimidate society," he said.
The regime is taking advantage of the lack of international attention to carry out as many executions as possible," Amiri-Moghaddam observed.
