United Nations population data place Jakarta as the world's largest city with 41.9 million residents, followed by Dhaka with 36.6 million and Tokyo with 33.4 million. Dhaka moved from ninth to second place and is projected to become the world's largest city by 2050. The number of megacities—urban areas with more than 10 million inhabitants—has risen to 33, up from eight in 1975. Asia accounts for 19 of those 33 megacities and nine of the top 10. Other major Asian megacities include New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Manila, Kolkata and Seoul; Cairo is the only non-Asian top-10 city.
