A private mid-size Learjet 45 carrying Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar crashed in a field in western India while en route from Mumbai to Baramati, killing all five on board. The aircraft burst into flames on crash-landing, scattering wreckage and producing heavy smoke visible in images from the scene. Two staff members and two crew members who were aboard were also killed. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has opened an investigation into the cause of the crash. Pawar, 66, came from a powerful political family and had been traveling to campaign in a local election; Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute.
