His final photo was of the bomber that killed him: the last journalist to die before Assad fell

Anas Alkharboutli, a 32-year-old photojournalist, was killed in an airstrike by Bashar al-Assad's forces on December 4, 2024, just before the regime's collapse. Working alongside colleague Omar Haj Kadour, he was documenting the rebels' rapid advance that would eventually bring an end to 13 years of civil war. Despite his warnings and safety measures, Alkharboutli succumbed to severe injuries on the way to the hospital. His death highlights the extreme dangers journalists face in Syria, with his passing being the last among 283 recorded killed since the revolution began in 2011.
