The Israeli military had previously claimed responsibility for Sinwar's death in May and for Abu Obeida three months later. Abu Obeida's real name was Huthaifa al-Kahlout, and his last statement came in early September as Israel began a major assault on Gaza City. Abu Obeida provided battlefield updates, reported ceasefire violations, and discussed Israeli captive-for-prisoner deals. Several other top Hamas military and political leaders have also been killed.
