Guinea-Bissau cracks down on foreign media as elections near DW 08/29/2025

RTP, RDP and the Lusa news agency were blocked in Guinea-Bissau on August 15. Journalists have been denied access to official venues, excluded from covering government matters, and faced repeated broadcast disruptions. Press professionals report systematic obstruction, public insults, and threats to jobs, creating an atmosphere of fear since President Umaro Sissoco Embalo took office in 2020. International organisations including RSF, CPJ and ENR condemned the expulsions and called the measures arbitrary. Concerns center on the timing, three months before elections, and the potential for restricted and influenced media coverage during the campaign.
It started when our colleague Fatima Tchuma Camara, a Guinean working for RDP, was denied access to the presidential palace. Later, I was excluded from covering government matters for RTP Africa. Broadcasts by RTP and RDP were repeatedly blocked,
systematically obstructed in their work, publicly insulted, and prevented from doing their jobs
To this day they have given no official explanation. All indications point to an arbitrary measure. RSF urges the government to immediately lift the suspension,
This shutdown, imposed three months before the elections, suggests the authorities intend to restrict and influence coverage.
