"For the first time in more than half a century, we face a world without any binding limits on the strategic nuclear arsenals of the two states that possess the overwhelming majority of the global stockpile of nuclear weapons, Guterres said in a statement on Wednesday. He said New Start and other arms control treaties had drastically improved the security of all peoples."
"This dissolution of decades of achievement could not come at a worse time the risk of a nuclear weapon being used is the highest in decades, he said, after Russian suggestions of using tactical nuclear weapons early in the Ukraine war. Russia and the US control more than 80% of the world's nuclear warheads. Guterres urged Washington and Moscow to return to the negotiating table without delay and to agree upon a successor framework."
The New START treaty between the United States and Russia has expired, formally removing limits on their strategic nuclear arsenals and freeing both states from long-standing restrictions. For the first time in over half a century there are no binding limits on the two states that hold the vast majority of the global nuclear stockpile. The two countries control more than 80% of the world's nuclear warheads. The treaty previously capped deployed strategic warheads at 1,550 per side and reduced arsenals significantly. The expiry raises the highest-in-decades risk of nuclear weapon use and could undermine the 1970 NPT ahead of review.
