It is difficult to imagine that this used to be a warzone... a battleground. Kinmen, China and Taiwan are all part of the same nation.
Defences line the beaches of Kinmen where nationalists beat back the communists in the wake of the 1949 civil war. Xi said in his New Year's address that China's unification with democratic Taiwan was a historical inevitability.
