Fact check: Debunking claims in the US-Israel war with Iran
"Videos claiming to show the US-Israel-Iran war are flooding social media. And while many look dramatic or terrifying, a lot of them are fake, AI-generated, or taken completely out of context. Fighting has erupted in Iran and the Middle East after Israel and the US attacked the country, following a US military build-up in the region."
"Since then, a lot of false claims of attacks have been spread across various social media platforms and in multiple languages; many of them are AI-generated. DW Fact check debunked a few viral claims and put together a list that will help you tell apart fake from real content."
"On February 28, during U.S. and Israeli missile strikes on Iran, a girls' school in Minab, southern Iran, was hit. According to media reports, Iranian officials accused Israel and the U.S. of carrying out the strikes. On Sunday, Israel reportedly denied responsibility. These accusations cannot currently be verified independently."
Following US and Israeli military operations against Iran, numerous videos claiming to document the conflict have flooded social media platforms in multiple languages. Many of these videos are AI-generated, fabricated, or taken completely out of context, creating widespread misinformation. Fact-checkers have identified false claims circulating across social media, including misidentified footage and misleading narratives. One example involves a video of a destroyed building in Minab, Iran, which was falsely claimed to show a school attack in Peshawar, Pakistan from 2014. In reality, the footage authentically depicts a girls' school in Minab that was struck during US and Israeli missile operations on February 28. Iranian officials attributed the strike to Israel and the US, though Israel denied responsibility. Casualty figures reported by Iranian state media and UN sources cannot be independently verified.
