Europe should prepare for Greenland's annexation and end of NATO: Experts
"We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defence."
"It has been the formal position of the US government since the beginning of this administration that Greenland should be part of the United States."
"If the United States decides to attack another NATO country, then everything would stop that includes NATO and therefore post-World War II security."
"Should the darkest hour come and the United States uses military force to annex Greenland, the essence of Article 5 and collective defence within NATO would lose its meaning."
The United States abducted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3 and President Donald Trump expressed interest in annexing Greenland, citing defense needs. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller stated that Greenland should be part of the United States. The intervention in Venezuela was followed by threats against Greenland and other territories in the hemisphere, increasing the likelihood of US moves in the Arctic. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a US attack on a NATO country would halt NATO operations and end post-World War II security. The annexation of Greenland would render NATO’s Article 5 collective-defense commitment meaningless and could advance Russia’s objectives in Ukraine.
