"The police never gave us an answer, and said they would put together a team to look for him."
""After the arrests of both journalists, our organization monitored the case with the families and other media organizations. Both had been missing for over 10 days,""
""Arbitrarily arresting journalists and keeping them incommunicado shows how far Ethiopian authorities might go in the repression against journalists,""
""media and anti-terror laws continue to be weaponized against journalists, internet shutdowns are used to silence reporting and arbitrary arrests have become routine.""
Journalists in Ethiopia have faced increasing arrests, disappearances and abductions in recent months. Abdulsemed Mohamed disappeared on August 11 in Addis Ababa; Yonas Amare was abducted on August 13 from his home. Both were missing for over ten days and have since been released, with no public comment from them or authorities. Media groups and rights organizations describe a climate of repression citing arbitrary arrests, incommunicado detention, weaponization of media and anti-terror laws, internet shutdowns to silence reporting, multiple journalists jailed in 2024, and some facing trial on charges of dissemination of hateful disinformation.
