Democrats Sound Like They're in Doha
"The topics covered are broad and diverse, but on Israeli-Palestinian matters, in addition to touting their own role in negotiating a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages, the Qataris made space for a wide range of strongly critical voices of Israel: former Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif (whose position is that Israel should simply disappear), the American scholars and think tankers Rob Malley and Trita Parsi, Tucker Carlson, numerous distinguished Palestinians."
"I was in Doha to speak with Qatari officials about the steps they must take to get President Donald Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza under way. After Israel's attempt to kill Hamas leaders in Doha in mid-September, Qatar (together with Turkey) finally exerted enough pressure on Hamas to agree to release all remaining Israeli hostages without a full withdrawal of Israeli troops. At the same time, Trump pressured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a cease-fire without the complete dismantlement of Hamas."
Qatar funds the Doha Forum, providing business-class travel and accommodation for about 5,000 attendees, using the event to showcase its central diplomatic role and to shape the narrative. The forum presented a broad agenda but included many sharply critical voices about Israel, including Javad Zarif (whose position is that Israel should simply disappear), Rob Malley, Trita Parsi, Tucker Carlson, and numerous Palestinian figures, while Hillary Clinton was the only prominent speaker offering a different perspective; some Israelis attended but none spoke on stage. Qatar and Turkey pressured Hamas to release remaining hostages after an Israeli attempt on Hamas leaders in Doha, and Trump secured an Israeli commitment to a cease-fire without full dismantlement of Hamas. Implementation of the plan's second phase, which calls for Hamas disarmament, has since stalled.
