China has sent 33 fighter jets and a group of six naval vessels towards Taiwan, the largest deployment since Taiwan elected a pro-independence president. This comes after two US Congressmen visited Taiwan, marking the first official US delegation since Taiwan's election. The increased military pressure from Beijing includes 13 Chinese fighter jets crossing the unofficial median line in the Taiwan Strait that separates Taiwan from China.
Beijing has sent 33 fighter jets and a group of six naval vessels toward Taiwan, the island's Defense Ministry said on Saturday, adding that Taiwan responded by deploying its own forces.
The tensions in the Taiwan Strait coincide with a meeting between senior US and Chinese officials in Bangkok. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are discussing how to cool tensions and maintain strategic communication and a responsible relationship between the two countries.
During talks, Foreign Minister Wang was expected to make clear China's position on Taiwan and on US.
