""It constitutes a direct offense to the memory of the victims of the dictatorship and their families," the Association of Relatives of Detained and Disappeared Persons wrote last week."
""It reaffirms a history of apologizing for the dictatorship and a commitment to impunity.""
President-elect José Antonio Kast named his cabinet ahead of his March 11, 2026 inauguration, selecting controversial figures including two former lawyers of dictator Augusto Pinochet. Fernando Rabat, who defended Pinochet in an embezzlement case, will head the justice and human rights ministry, which still oversees dictatorship-era cases. Fernando Barros, who defended Pinochet during his 1998 London detention and extradition proceedings, was named defense minister. Families of victims and human rights groups condemned Rabat's appointment as an affront to victims' memory and a signal of apologizing for the dictatorship and commitment to impunity. Other appointees include Jorge Quiroz (finance), Francisco Pérez Mackenna (foreign affairs), and Daniel Mas (mining).
