"the rule of law must prevail over the rule of force"
"grounded in law and dialogue."
"the bloc's protocol that regulates events relating to coups in Africa is reactionary in nature."
"I think the African Union's suspension of Madagascar with respect to the unconstitutional power grab that has taken place speaks to the limited mechanisms that the Pan-African body has at its disposal to ensure that there is some form of accountability or repercussions,"
Madagascar's membership in the African Union was suspended after a military coup that ousted President Andry Rajoelina following three weeks of Gen Z-led anti-government protests. Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who led the CAPSAT unit that mutinied and joined protesters, was sworn in as president. Madagascar joins Sudan, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon on the list of AU-suspended states after coups. AU chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stated that "the rule of law must prevail over the rule of force" and described the suspension as "grounded in law and dialogue." Analysts criticized the AU's reliance on suspensions and limited mechanisms for accountability.
