"There are still people missing. The death toll might climb higher,"
"The town of Mucum as we knew it no longer exists."
"I regret the death of a woman in a rescue attempt over the Taquari river,"
"The wire broke, she and a rescuer fell. Unfortunately the woman did not survive and the rescuer is seriously injured."
A powerful extratropical cyclone struck southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul, killing at least 21 people and displacing more than 1,600 residents. The storm impacted roughly 60 cities and destroyed the homes of about 1,650 people, causing widespread flooding and infrastructure damage. In Mucum, a city of about 50,000, 15 deaths were recorded from one household and officials reported people remain missing as rescue operations continue. Authorities urged residents to prepare supplies for 72 hours while search and rescue efforts proceed. A rescue over the Taquari River resulted in one death and a serious injury. A June cyclone previously caused 16 deaths and damage across 40 cities.
