Rodrigo Paz, a 58-year-old pro-business centrist from the Christian Democratic Party, was sworn in as Bolivia's president, ending nearly two decades of leftist rule. Paz won a run-off against far-right rival Jorge Quiroga while socialist incumbent Luis Arce did not seek reelection amid internal party conflicts and an economic crisis. Paz characterized the inherited situation as morally and materially indebted with fuel shortages and empty markets. He pledged "capitalism for all," gradual market-oriented reforms, thawed ties with the United States and other trading partners, subsidy cuts, and domestic political alliances as his party controls 39% of legislative seats.
