
"Benin said it had foiled a coup attempt by a group of soldiers who sought to "destabilize the state." The soldiers appeared on state TV to declare the dissolution of the government earlier in the morning. The interior minister of Benin said on Sunday that the country's armed forces had thwarted an attempted coup. "A small group of soldiers launched a mutiny with the goal of destabilizing the state and its institutions," said Alassane Seidou in a statement."
"Earlier on Sunday, soldiers from a group that calls itself the Military Committee for Refoundation (Comite militaire pour la refondation), or CMR, appeared on state TV and announced that President Patrice Talon had been "removed from office as president of the republic." The soldiers said all state institutions had also been dissolved and that Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri had been appointed president of the military committee, before the TV signal was cut."

The French Embassy reported gunfire near Camp Guezo close to the presidential residence in Cotonou. Government spokespeople and the regular army moved to regain control, stating President Talon was safe and the mutiny involved only a small group that briefly controlled television transmission.
