"The Dalai Lama is the most revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism and a tireless advocate for the rights of Tibetans since the region was annexed by China. He was 23 when he fled the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, in fear for his life after Chinese troops crushed an uprising in 1959. He has never been able to return, and in the years since he set up home in the Indian city of Dharamshala alongside fellow Tibetan exiles."
The 90-year-old Dalai Lama won a Grammy in the narration and storytelling category for his spoken-word album Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The award joins his other honors, including a Nobel Peace Prize, a presidential medal of freedom and the Gandhi Peace Prize. He said he received the recognition with gratitude and humility and framed it as recognition of shared universal responsibility. Beijing condemned the win, calling it anti-China political manipulation and saying art awards should not be used for political purposes. The Dalai Lama has lived in exile since 1959 and remains a global advocate for peace and Tibetan rights. The audiobook features his recordings on peace, compassion and mindfulness set to music by Amjad Ali Khan and his sons.
