The tremor killed at least three people and injured dozens, prompting panicked evacuations as families rushed into the streets. Residents reported strong jolts, shaking buildings, jammed staircases, and frightened children. Tremors were felt as far as Kolkata, India, more than 325 kilometres from the epicenter. A medical student who fell from an eight‑storey building in Dhaka was among the dead. Authorities reported no immediate major structural damage. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus said emergency services were responding swiftly and the situation was being closely monitored.
