Mexico City authorities arrested 13 people for their alleged roles in a May attack that killed two high-ranking municipal officials. Three suspects allegedly participated directly in the daytime shooting, and others were linked to logistical preparation. The victims were Mayor Clara Brugada's personal secretary Ximena Guzman and adviser Jose Munoz. Mayor Brugada pledged that the government will not rest until the truth is known and justice is served. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity, vowed to ensure justice, and offered federal support to the city. For decades Mexico has faced high crime rates and targeted violence against officials and journalists. Sheinbaum announced a security strategy shortly after taking office last year.
The daytime shooting of two of Brugada's top aides by gunmen on motorbikes shocked the city, seen as a relative pocket of safety compared to the rest of the country. The victims were Brugada's personal secretary Ximena Guzman and adviser Jose Munoz. In memory of our colleagues and out of respect for their families and friends, this government will not rest until the truth is known and justice is served, the mayor said in a social media post on Wednesday.
After the shooting, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, a Brugada ally who previously served as the capital's mayor, vowed that her government would ensure that justice is served. We express our solidarity and support for the families of these two individuals who have worked in our movement for a long time, Sheinbaum said in May. We know them, we stand with their families, and we will give her [Brugada] all the support the city needs from the Mexican government.
