At least 127 civilians killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon since ceasefire, UN says
"At least 127 civilians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since a ceasefire was declared nearly a year ago, the UN has said as it called for an impartial investigation into the strikes. We continue to witness increasing attacks by the Israeli military, resulting in the killing of civilians and destruction of civilian objects in Lebanon, coupled with alarming threats of a wider, intensified offensive, said Thameen Al-Kheetan, a spokesperson for the UN human rights office, at a Geneva press briefing."
"On Friday, Israel said it had targeted terrorists from the Palestinian militant group Hamas, allied with Hezbollah, in that strike. But Kheetan told reporters in Geneva: All the fatalities we have documented as a result of this strike were civilians, raising serious concerns that the Israeli military's attack may have violated international humanitarian law principles on the conduct of hostilities."
The UN human rights office called for an impartial investigation after verifying at least 127 civilian deaths in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since a ceasefire nearly a year ago. Lebanon accuses Israel of breaching the ceasefire by continuing strikes and keeping forces inside Lebanese territory. Israel accuses Hezbollah of rebuilding military capabilities and violating ceasefire terms. The Lebanese health ministry reports more than 330 killed and 945 injured since 27 November. A strike on the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp killed 13 people, including 11 children; documented fatalities from that strike were civilians, raising international humanitarian law concerns.
