Amir Amiri, a US citizen held in Afghanistan since December 2024, was released on September 28 and is en route to Doha following Qatari-mediated efforts. The release occurred during a visit by US hostage envoy Adam Boehler to Kabul and is the fifth US citizen freed this year. The move followed a recent Taliban release of an elderly British couple who flew from Doha after medical checks. Qatar has regularly handled US interests with the Taliban and reportedly began negotiating Amiri's case in March. The Taliban confirmed Amiri's identity but provided few details; an unnamed official said he is 36 years old.
