The upcoming documentary 'Sally' chronicles the life of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, focusing on her covert 27-year relationship with partner Tam O'Shaughnessy. The film, directed by Cristina Costantini, features insights from O'Shaughnessy, who reflects on the personal risks Ride faced. Premiering June 16, shortly before the anniversary of Ride's historic flight in 1983, the film discusses themes of societal acceptance and LGBTQ+ visibility. It also features commentary from notable figures like Billie Jean King and Ride's family, as well as her fellow astronauts, enriching the narrative with personal anecdotes.
"Sally risked everything to make history, but telling the world about us was a risk she just couldn't take," O'Shaughnessy says in the documentary.
"The sense that on a perfect planet, or merely an open and just society, Ride should have been able to be the remarkable astronaut she was and live 'out and proud and all that stuff,' to quote O'Shaughnessy, pervades 'Sally.'"
