A United Nations report revealed that 140 women and girls are killed daily by intimate partners or family members, marking home as the most dangerous place for them.
UN Women's Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda remarked that these killings persist due to unresolved issues like gender stereotyping and social norms, emphasizing a pattern of violence tied to power dynamics.
The report highlights that Africa has the highest number of such killings, with an alarming rate of 2.9 victims per 100,000 people, indicating a dire situation for women in that region.
Despite various regional statistics, the UN stresses that no area is exempt from this extreme form of violence, as the underlying societal norms worldwide continue to perpetuate these tragedies.
