The Irish Independent's View: Kate O'Connor's silver in World Indoor Athletics Championships is an inspiration to all young girls

Kate O'Connor's silver medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing marks a significant achievement, making her only the third Irish woman to earn a medal at this prestigious event. At just 24, she also recently won a European medal, showcasing her talent amidst competitors who are professional athletes, contrasting with her commitment to pursuing a master's degree alongside her athletic goals. O'Connor's success not only highlights her individual accomplishment but also brings renewed attention to Irish athletics as she prepares for the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
"All those girls out there are professionals, the top two and the girl that finished below me. I'm studying to do a master's, I'm doing athletics on the side."
"Europe is the home of combined eventing. For O'Connor to medal in Europe was significant, but to move on and do the same thing within two weeks in a very attritional event is massive," said a delighted Paul McNamara.
"After reaching such stellar heights, anticipation of another sparkling performance - this time in the outdoor season - at the World Championships in Tokyo later this year can now begin."
